Kevin VK2CE, the Event Organizer, has sent a personal congratulation to all VK amateurs who participated in this year's ILLW event held last weekend.
In 1998 four Australian stations participated in what then was a very young event. Last weekend saw 66 stations registered with possibly others on the air who did not send-in an entry form.
Australia has around 400 lighthouses which qualify for the event which means some 17 percent of our lights were on the air.
Some of these lighthouses are in remote locations and require some expenditure and effort to get there and set up a station. For example a VK3 ham went to King Island, another amateur walked a long way to get to Wilson's Promontory lighthouse and no doubt there are others who can speak of similar feats.
VK's were second only to the USA where 80 stations registered which is only a very small proportion of their total number of lighthouses. It was good to see an upsurge in numbers from that country.
Kevin singled out Jim Linton VK3PC for his untiring efforts to promote this event both here and overseas, and hopes to see you all again next year and oh! Bring a friend!

Ma.16-8-2011: ILLW heads in the right direction

There’s been improvements this year have been in Australia, Chile, Portugal, South Africa and the USA, while generally Europe has been lower than previous.

The basic objective of the fun event is to promote awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation, and to promote amateur radio and to foster International goodwill.
It’s not too late to enter and activate one this weekend.

The 400th entry in the International Lighthouse and LightshipWeekend goes to Bill Tinnion M0DXT at the Maryport old lighthouse in Cumbria, England.

The 48-hour event is not a contest but is plenty of fun. Those participating are requested to take the time to work others as well as the slow operator, new licensee or QRP stations.
Qualifying as lightships are 16 entries from Belgium, England, Germany, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Sweden, USA and Wales.
This is a growing area of interest that involves lightships which are, or have been, listed officially as floating aids to navigation.

Za.30-7-2011: Time running out for ILLW entries
With just weeks to the 14th annual International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend, some 360 entries have been recorded so far from 46 countries.
Many have already reached or exceed last year’s totals. These include Australia, Canada, Chile, Honduras, Ireland, Italy, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Saint Lucia and the USA. Most have further accessible lighthouses that are worth entries and participation.
We welcome new lighthouses from Azerbaijan and the Lebanon. Among those yet to enter are Alaska, Cuba, Canary Islands, China, Cyprus, Falkland Islands, Hawaii, Iceland, India, Japan, Jersey or Channel Islands, Mexico, Panama, Taiwan and, Uruguay.
Germany and England are among the entries late this year, but organisers remain confident that last year’s record of 447 can be met again.
Included in the rules is a requirement to be at one of the historic structures and not a great distance away. This puts all entries on level footing and reinforces the link between wireless communication, lighthouse keepers and seafarers over the years.
Come and join the 48 hour fun event by setting up a station at a lighthouse or lightship on the full third weekend of the month, which this year is August 20-21.
