Ma.2-1-2012 UPDATE: Sable Island DXpeditie uitgesteld!

Sable Island DXpedition postponed!

The latest update, dated December 30th, states (edited): "Hi Everyone - Unfortunately, we had to postpone the Sable Island CY0 DXpedition due to the landing area on the island being under water.

"A winter storm with 20+ foot swells pushed water onto the sand 'runway' on Wednesday evening. Al Wilson, the OIC on Sable, made an assessment of the landing area yesterday. Ron and I talked with Al and there was no possibility of a flight to the island in the next five days. After that, it would depend on how quickly the water would drain from the landing area and if any other storms affect the island. At that point, we decided to postpone the DXpedition.

"Needless to say, we are extremely disappointed that we have had to postpone the DXpedition. We have learned first-hand there is really no season of the year that is ideal for flights. Late yesterday morning
we met with Ted of Maritime Air. Ted advised it has been the worst year he has experienced as far as scheduling flights. Maritime Air provides logistical flight services to Environment Canada on the island.

"Even though we are disappointed, we are not defeated. Maritime Air
allowed us to store our gear to help facilitate our next attempt. We are discussing two options with the Sable Island station.

"We appreciate your interest in the DXpedition. We have received a lot of encouragement from DX'ers around the world. Continue to check the DXpedition Web site for updates HERE

26-2-2012: New service for Amateur Radio's big day out

Planning is well under way for 'Amateur Radio's big day out' next year at the Wyong racecourse.

Australia's Central Coast Amateur Radio Club Field day at Wyong has a new service for next year. A 'group meet-up' service.

There are several Amateur Radio groups who are spread across the country and rarely are able to meet-up in person, so why not take advantage of the fact that many group members travel to the Wyong Field Day?

This is a free service.

The CCARC will allocate 30 minute slots throughout the day on a first come first served basis and publicise these before the field day and announce them over the public address system throughout the day.

An area in the coffee and tea room on the 2nd floor of the race club building will be set aside as the "meet-up point". This has lift access available for those who have difficulty with stairs.

As the slots are already filling, it is recommended to get your
applicationin as soon as possible by sending an email to WFDMeetup at gmail.com

The list will close at the end of January or earlier if all slots are
taken, so that signs can be printed for display at the event and the list publicised.

Make sure you have the date firmly in your calendar - CCARC Field day at Wyong - February 26th. 2012 and the Field-Day website at www.fieldday.org.au for all information about the event.

Zo.22-1/Ma.6-2-2012 first semester: Malpelo Island DXpedition

-----------------------------------

UPDATE 10-11-2011: Malpelo Island DXpedition 2012

Operators Sal HK1T, Jorge HK1R and Faber HK6F went on a reconnaissance trip to Malpelo Island between October 23-30th.

They did this to prepare for their January 2012 DXpedition. Read a short written summary of their observations and see the pictures of what they saw and did on the island HERE.

Also, the following press release was sent out on November 2nd:
"Three members of the Malpelo 2012 team have just completed a seven day reconnaissance visit to Malpelo.. This will be a very demanding DXpedition for several reasons. The terrain is particularly difficult, near vertical at times. And in order to have a clear radio view of Asia, the Pacific region and W6/W7; it will be necessary to locate operating site(s) and antennas at the top of the mountain. This further complicates the difficulties and physical risks to the team.

"Team members vary in age from 25 to 73. But under the leadership
andconstant urging of our team's medical doctors, K9SG and W0GJ, we have all embarked on a physical training regime. We should all be ready for the challenges come early 2012.

"Three members of the team K4UEE, N4GRN and W6IZT will travel to Colombia Nov. 5-8th, for a planning meeting with team leader, Jorge, HK1R, and other team members. The purpose of the meeting is to review all the checklists and responsibilities for each team member. With the information gained on the recent reconnaissance visit, decisions can be finalized concerning camp/operating sites, antenna types and placement, safety measures and other critical decisions necessary to the ultimate success for the DXpedition.

"One critical decision to be made concerns the duration of the
operation. We have permission to stay on site for 17 days versus the 14 days now planned. We will be reviewing the DXpedition budget to determine if we can afford the extra 15,000 USDs expense for 3 additional days.

"Contributions are gratefully accepted HERE.
We plan periodic press releases with information of interest. Also, watch the website for breaking news.

"Thanks, Jorge Prieto, HK1R, DXpedition leader Bob Allphin, K4UEE-co-leader Gregg Marco, W6IZT-co-leader."

UPDATE 1-10-2011:

The Malpelo 2012 DXpedition is pleased to announce that the HK0NA operating team has added two new operators, both physicians..W0GJ and K9SG. The team now consists of 18 operators representing eight countries.

Two members of the team will travel to Malpelo for a reconnaissance visit in late October. The purpose is to check out possible operating sites and make final decisions on the type and placement of antennas. We want to try to have antennas oriented for all parts of the DX world. Also, some equipment  will be moved onto the island and stored until our DXpedition begins in late January 2012.

Every effort is being made to extend the length of time available for
operating. This requires coordination with the authorities andagencies that oversee the island and the charter boat company. It appears that we can get to the island one day earlier and may have the option of staying a few extra days. Of course, our costs will rise accordingly. The current plan has the team QRV on or about January 23rd for 12-14 days.

Operations are planned on 160 through 6 meters on CW, SSB and one Digital mode.

Several of the Elecraft K3s are already in Colombia. The other K3s, five KPA500 amplifiers, antennas from DX Engineering, and Spiderbeam 65 foot masts for the low band antennas will be shipped soon. The Alpha 8410s are on their way.

The Malpelo team is paying all their transportation expenses to/from Colombia and putting up about one-half of all the DXpedition costs. To cover the remainder of our expenses, your financial assistance is kindly requested. Contributions are being sought from DX Foundations, DX Clubs and individual DXers. You may contribute directly to DXARC (Colombia) or to K4UEE (North America), DJ9ZB(Europe), or JA1ELY (Asia/JA).

See our website: www.hk0na.com for further information on how you can help.

N2OO and the SJDXA have graciously agreed to handle QSL duties.

We plan periodic press releases with information of interest. Also, watch the website for breaking news.

Thanks,

Jorge Prieto, HK1R

UPDATE 6-8-2011:
The Malpelo 2012 DXpedition is pleased to announce that the HK0NA operating team is now complete with 16 operators.

This is an international team of excellent operators, representing 8
different countries, and includes 3 members of the CQ DX Hall of Fame.

The team will depart from Buenaventura, Colombia on January 22, 2012 for the 235 mile trip to Malpelo. Depending on sea and landing conditions, we expect to be QRV within 36 hours after landing for about 10-12 days.

The team will return to Buenaventura on Feb. 6, 2012.

Operations are planned on 160 through 6 meters on CW, SSB and Digital modes.

We wish to thank Elecraft for the loan of seven K3 transceivers and five of the new KPA 500 amplifiers. RF Concepts (Alpha) has agreed to loan the team three Alpha 8410 amplifiers for use on the low bands and DX Engineering will supply most of the DXpedition antennas.

Thanks to N2OO and the SJDXA who have graciously agreed to handle QSL duties. You may recall the expert job they did for 3Y0X and K5D recently.

Contributions are being sought from DX Foundations, DX Clubs and individual DXers. Your financial assistance is kindly requested. You may contribute directly to DXARC (Colombia) or to K4UEE (North America), DJ9ZB (Europe), or JA1ELY ( Asia/JA). See our website: www.hk0na.com for further details on how you can help.

We plan periodic press releases with information of interest. Also, watch the website for breaking news.

ISS Shadow Beacon Experiment postponed to May-June 2012

Word has been received from Russia that the ISS Shadow-Beacon
Experiment
, announced earlier in November, has been postponed until the May-June 2012 timeframe.

This will give time for a new amateur radio transceiver to be delivered to the ISS by cargo vehicle and give the crew more time to prepare for the experiment.

Eind mei/Begin juni-2012: MS0INT - Isle of Rockall

A team of four highly experienced IOTA activators have plans to operate from the extremely rare and dangerous Isle of Rockall, EU-189.

Accompanied by an expert climber, they aim to land and stay a top Rockall for maximum 48 hours, in what will be considered one of the most ambitious island activations the ham radio world has seen.

The four operators are George EA2TA, Christian EA3NT, Simon IZ7ATN and Col MM0NDX - all part of the larger MS0INT IOTA adventure group which has previously been on air from EU-059, EU-111 and EU-118. Completing the team is Nick Hancock, a climber with considerable experience in inhospitable places, thus increasing the chances of activating the islet.

Due to the fact Rockall is the most isolated speck of rock surrounded by water on the surface of the Earth, weather and seas dictate this entire expedition. The team are very aware near perfect landing conditions are required, and the skipper of their yacht has final say.

With research and historical data, we believe the end of May / beginning June 2012 is a viable time period to put Rockall on the air.

Each member will pay their own flights, additional travel costs, food, equipment and charter boat expenses.

To help offset some of this expense, the team seek generous donations from within the IOTA community, DX organisations and like-minded individual operators who all appreciate the scale involved in this difficult activation.

All donors form part of this exciting project and will be listed on our website which is currently under construction. Significant contributors will be added to our QSL card. To donate, you can use paypal: rockall.eu189@gmail.com

Thank you!

UK Six Metre Group launch newsletter The United Kingdom Six Metre Group (UKSMG) has launched an initiative initially to UK radio clubs and societies, to keep them informed regarding operating on 50MHz. A bi-monthly newsletter will be e-mailed to club secretaries who have registered to receive it. The newsletter will contain a wide variety of information including practical operating tips. Much will be specifically targeted at the large number of operators who have not previously experienced the enhanced F2 propagation expected during the sun spot cycle peak in 2012. Any club secretaries who have not already registered to receive the newsletter can do so at www.uksmg.org/phplist [RSGB]

Information about current VHF activities can be found on the VHF DX portal"Make More Miles on VHF" at: www.MMMonVHF.de/ SOTA (Summits On The Air) Watch Alerts at: www.sotawatch.org/

Di.3-1-2012: Winter edition of the 5 MHz Newsletter now online

The 2nd - Winter - Edition of the 5 MHz Newsletter has just been published and includes news and features about 5 MHz, including a chart of the current 5 MHz allocations worldwide.

You can freely access this latest edition of the 5 MHz Newsletter from Google Documents at THE WEB

Although originating in the UK, the 5 MHz Newsletter invites world-wide interest, both in readers and contributors. Understandably all that we ask is when contributing items of news concerning new 5 MHz permissions or allocations, that the contributor can provide a means of official verification of such. Its size of course is dependent on news and other relevant contributions from 5 MHz operators and listeners around the world.

For those without Internet access wishing to have a paper copy of the 5 MHz Newsletter, a Self-Addressed Envelope (SAE) of sufficient size to take folded A4 sheets, together with adequate postage (or IRCs in the case of outside of the UK) will bring a copy of the latest edition.

Requests should be addressed to the Editor, G4MWO, who is QTHR in the UK Callbook and on QRZ.com
